Allergy Information

An allergy happens, when a person is sensitized to a particular substance, that starts an allergic reaction. These substances are called allergens, or triggers, because they cause an overreaction by the body’s immune system. There are naturally occurring allergens, like pollens, industrial substances, like chemicals, and the foods that we eat, usually proteins, amongst many others.

There are four different ways through which allergens can get into the body:

Inhalation - as with dust mites and pollen.
Eating - as with some foods.
Absorption - via the skin, as with some chemicals and plants.
Injection - some people are allergic to drugs, such as penicillin.

If an allergic individual experiences allergens, for the first time, the symptoms do not occur, but the immune system is sensitized. Think of it, as becoming ready to resist allergens, that it wrongly considers to be invaders, intent on damaging the body.

Having become hypersensitized to a specific substance, the next time the immune system experiences the same type of allergen; it automatically mass-produces antibodies to cope with the imagined threat. These antibodies bind with the allergens, and as they move around the body, they interact with other cells. Substances, including histamine, create inflammation, that is a frequent allergy symptom. Allergies differ in different people, and the symptoms go from being as mild as a runny nose, to anaphylaxis, which is sometimes fatal.

Diagnoses and Testing

Where it is suitable, skin testing is preferred to blood testing, because it is more specific, easier to do, and costs less. Nevertheless, your physician will know what is best suited to your disorder.

Treatment

Doctors, who are experts in treating allergic diseases, undertake intensive training. In the USA a minimum of nine years is required to qualify as an allergist immunologist. It is good to know that real advances in medical treatments have been developed by allergists. These include quick acting epinephrine tablets, low allergy foods, and advances in treating yellow jacket stings.

Immunotherapy

If immunotherapy is thought to be a suitable treatment, it may either reduce the intensity of an allergy or cure it completely. It involves injecting gradually increased dosage, of the allergen, identified as causing the symptoms. There have been good results in dealing with rhinitis and asthma.

Prescribed Drugs

Various drugs are used to deal with the symptoms of allergy which include, antihistamines, cortisone, hydrocortisone, theophlene, epinephrine, and dexamethosone. A few preparations are available over the counter, but it is best to find out from your doctor, what is recommeded for your own allergy.

General

It is not known precisely why some people suffer from allergies, whilst others do not. It may be that there is an inherited factor with some allergies.

It does seem clear that the incidence of allergies is growing, and that it seems to be related to modern living.

As an example, offices have become airtight, with windows that used to open being replaced by air conditioning. However, the quality of the outdoor air, particularly in urban conurbations, is questionable. On a world wide basis, rain forests are being cut down, whilst gas guzzling vehicles are everywhere. Consider the economic advancement of the emerging nations, and you have a recipe for industrial contamination.

Some of the Chinese settlers develop hay fever, after moving to the USA, for a few years. More recently, there has been much publicity about industrial pollution in Beijing, and other cities. Probably the time could soon arrive, when the good citizens of China will have their own, local grown sort of rhinitis! Will the sweet smell of success be accompanied by allergic respiratory diseases – if it does, did the end justify the means?
