What is gastric bypass and is this surgery an appropriate option for weight loss solutions? While the first half of the question, what is gastric bypass, is an easily defined answer, the second half of the question leaves much more open for discussion. Gastric bypass is a medical and surgical procedure during which the stomachs of pre-approved obese candidates, especially of those who are morbidly obese, is literally sectioned off creating a very small stomach pouch for food. Gastric bypass surgery is often a choice for those with a body mass index, BMI, of 40 or higher or even for those with a BMI of 35 to 40 if they have chronic health conditions which can be improved with weight reduction. There are many individual and group physician practices which are now focusing on gastric bypass surgery. Hospitals have recruited physicians who specialize in this procedure and have opened clinics to tap into the ever expanding market of morbid obesity. Gastric bypass is a surgery of restrictions involving the stomach. In lay terms, it is often referred to as stomach stapling surgery, which is quite literally the concept. Surgery involves limiting the size of the stomach through restricting it by creating a significantly smaller stomach to hold the food. At first the newly created stomach will only hold about one ounce of food, but will generally relax and stretch out to approximately two to three ounces. With the smaller stomach and the inability to take in the magnitude of food quantity as in the past, when food is taken in, the stomach gets full almost immediately. This leads to less calorie absorption and less calories simple stated leads to weight loss. There are great success stories with gastric bypass surgery and current trends seem to indicate the approximately 30% of those who endure gastric bypass surgery ultimately lose the excess weight and keep it off. The good news is that for those who have suffered for years with morbid obesity, gastric bypass might now be an answer to years of heartache and pain. What is gastric bypass? Well, for those who have looked for an answer to obesity for years, gastric bypass just might be the answer.
