Players in World of Warcraft love to be the center of attention. Nothing says that more than getting a server first, whether that is the fire-lord Ragnaros or one of the six world-spawn raid bosses. This fascination with completing content is strangely shared across all server types, PVE and PVP rule-base alike.
Why is that? On a PVE server it is of course the true means of advancement. The true competition any PVE player should feel would be the completion of the PVE content right? And conversely, shouldn’t the PVP server find that aspect of the game less desirable than attaining high rank and boasting about PKs?
Yet this is not the case, or rather not the case now. When the game first came out over a year ago, the line between a PVP and a PVE server was drawn in the sand. Neither side respected the other much. PVPers called the others Carebears, and the PVEers responded by calling their opponents B-net kiddies.
Of course the drive to win drives us all and as the new players reached sixty and ran out of content to explore the line in the sand wavered. PVP grew dull with no reward and PVE had run UBRS into the ground. Both turned to the new raid content for outlet.
As Onyxia became killable and Ragnaros met his fate at the hands of stalwart raiding guilds it became clear that to win at PVP you had to raid PVE. The gear attained in high-end PVE instances allowed much more player advancement than any other method and soon the gunfire began to die down in Southshore and heat up in Molten Core general.
When the Honor system was implemented for a time the line became distinct again. The bones of the dead covered Hillsbrad to unplayability, Eastern Plaguelands and Stranglethorn raged. There was even quite a lot of action on the PVE servers as the new way to play was explored.
Then the battlegrounds came out and the line in the sand faded to nearly nothing. While the hot-spot PVP zones remained so for the time, most everyone sat outside the Warsong and Alterac Valley Portals, biding their time to go kill. Suddenly the PVE player could PVP with impunity, never being harassed in the game world but able to rack up thousands of HKs a day exactly when he wanted to and to stop when exactly he wanted to as well.
The PVP player felt betrayed. What was the point of world PVP now? The rewards and points were in the battlegrounds, not outside anymore. The only difference became that the PVP player’s alt could be harassed in Stranglethorn Vale and the PVE player’s could not.
And then the nails in the coffin: Dishonor Kills. With the advent of DKs, outside of instance PVP dropped to an all time low across all servers. No one wanted to lose days of work in the honor system by mistargeting or having someone in their party or raid mistarget a civilian.
The difference between servers is so minimal it barely exists anymore. Both PVP and PVE content is all instanced. If something doesn’t change soon they might as well rename all servers to PVE/P!
